Understanding Hospice and Palliative Care in improving the quality of Human Life

Hospice and palliative care both focus on comfort and quality of life, not curing disease. But they’re used at different stages.

Palliative Care
What it is: Specialized medical care for people with serious illnesses – cancer, heart failure, kidney disease, etc.
Goal: Relieve symptoms + stress. Think pain, nausea, fatigue, anxiety, breathing trouble.
When it starts: You can get it at any stage of a serious illness, even right after diagnosis. You can still get curative treatment like chemo or surgery at the same time.
Who provides it: Doctors, nurses, social workers, chaplains as a team
Where: Hospital, clinic, home, nursing home

Example: A cancer patient getting chemo and palliative care for pain + emotional support.

Hospice Care
What it is: A type of palliative care, but specifically for the end-of-life stage.
Goal: Comfort and dignity when cure is no longer the goal. Focus shifts from “treat the disease” to “treat the person”.
When it starts: Usually when a doctor estimates life expectancy is 6 months or less if the illness runs its normal course. Patient also agrees to stop curative treatments.
Who provides it: Same team + volunteers, plus bereavement support for family
Where: Mostly at home, but also hospice centers, hospitals, nursing homes

Example: Patient with advanced cancer stops chemo and gets hospice care at home for pain control, family counseling, spiritual support.

Key point people miss
Palliative care ≠ giving up. You can get it for years while still fighting the disease. Hospice = when the goal changes from cure to comfort.

In Nigeria, palliative care is still growing. Teaching hospitals like UCH Ibadan, LUTH, and National Hospital Abuja have palliative care units. Hospice services are fewer but groups like Hospice Nigeria exist.
