Journalism for Peace and Development calls on Gov. Okpebholo to sign UNSCR 1325 State Action Plan to Cement Security Legacy
BENIN CITY, EDO STATE – The advocacy group, Journalism for Peace and Development, has commended the Executive Governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Governor Monday Okpebholo, for his remarkable achievements in infrastructure and security since assuming office.
In a statement released today by the organization’s President, Isaac Eranga, the group noted that while the administration’s efforts in rebuilding roads, improving public facilities, and tackling immediate security threats are highly commendable, there remains one critical step to institutionalize a lasting, inclusive peace in Edo State.
According to Eranga, that crucial step is the formal signing and implementation of the Edo State Action Plan (SAP) on the United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security.
”Governor Monday Okpebholo has truly tried for the people of Edo State. We can see the tangible progress in infrastructure and the deliberate steps being taken to secure our communities,” Eranga stated. “However, to build a truly safer, resilient, and peaceful Edo State, we must address the structural and inclusive aspects of security. The Edo State Action Plan of the UNSCR 1325 is the blueprint to achieve this.”
The UNSCR 1325 State Action Plan is a homegrown policy document meticulously prepared by a broad spectrum of Edo citizens, civil society organizations, and stakeholders, under the expert coordination of the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP-Nigeria). The document outlines actionable frameworks to integrate women and youths into peacebuilding, conflict prevention, and decision-making processes.
Eranga emphasized that the document is fully ready and only awaits the Governor’s executive assent.
”This document is a product of the collective will of the Edo people. It is ready for your signature, Your Excellency. Giving your assent to this Action Plan will not only secure your place in history as a champion of inclusive peace, but it will also make the entire Esanland—and indeed all of Edo State—immensely proud of your leadership. We thank you in advance for your swift action on this matter,” Eranga added.
Journalism for Peace and Development urges the state executive council and allies within the administration to bring this vital document to the Governor’s desk, highlighting that true development cannot exist without sustainable, community-owned peace.
